Role: UX Designer project duration: July 9, 2020 - July 21, 2020

Overview

  • Responsibilities

Conducting interviews, paper and digital wire framing, low and high-fidelity prototyping, conducting usability studies, accounting for accessibility, and iterating on designs.

  • Project Goal

Design an app for people in need of help to quickly get the help they need and to make donating to causes efficient for the people who would like to help.

  • Key Challenge

Find a way to make a dedicated mobile app where users can quickly find a fast way to donate to different people who need money for different causes.

Meet the Users

  • Kathy

Kathy is a grandma with many grandchildren. Kathy would like a way to see if anyone would like to donate to her recently deceased husband’s funeral. She doesn't have enough money for his medical cost and funeral cost but would like a way to set up a donation page for her husband so maybe she can reach a goal.

  • Scott

Scott is a 14 year old kid from South Africa. Scott needs a kidney transplant and would like to find a donor. The town he lives in doesn't have much medical attention so he wants a way to look elsewhere for help. He needs to find someone willing to donate to his page to cover medical cost or to connect with him in order for him to get a kidney replacement.

Competitive Analysis

I looked at several competing companies due to the fact that I would not want a company to heavily infringe on the business’ revenue and popularity. MediFund has the opportunity to capitalize on this by bringing features from select competing companies to create a fluid and efficient user experience.

The majority of features between competitors were very similar however the main differences I noticed was

-easily accessible vs hardly accessible

-too many screens vs simplified interactions

-bright distracting interface vs minimalistic interface

The Journey

I constructed a user flow of what a basic start to finish flow might look like through our responsive website and dedicated mobile app. This will help me better understand ways users can interact with the services offered, as well as letting me see how effective one navigates through the site.

Ideation

I did a quick ideation exercise to come up with ideas for how to address gaps identified in the competitive audit. My focus was specifically on making a donation and simple navigation features.

Usability Study 1

Findings from the first study helped guide the designs from wireframes to mockups and showed that I needed to improve on the overall navigation of the app making it more of a fluid experience for the user.

Usability Study 2

The second study used a high-fidelity prototype and revealed what aspects of the mockups needed refining. when conducting the second usability study I found that users were much more satisfied with the navigation but needed more icons and simpler design.

Fixing Challenges

  • Based on the insights from the usability studies, I applied design changes like providing a clear layout and user flow.

  • Kept iterating on designs to improve on overall navigation.

  • Additional design changes included adding more accessible navigation so the user can go in an out of the main user flow, and providing a clearer indication of where things are located on the app.

Impact on People

“This is such a great tool in a time of need. I’m down and out due to health issues and the pandemic. My autistic son is turning 18, and I wanted it to be special for him and didn’t know how I was going to do it. Well, MediFund saves the day! Thank you!”

“This site allowed me to do something that would have been nearly impossible to coordinate without it: Dive into helping someone out there in the world, and gather together people and resources from all over the country in order to achieve that goal. Thank you!”

“This is a good website if you have never raised funds before. The app is very easy-to-use and gives you some good ideas for new ways to share the link. If you are hoping to reach out to people you don’t know, this is a great platform where they can feel their money is safe and they can put their trust in.”

”Thank you for providing your platform for raising money for a neighbour and a friend in need after an accident. It was great way to get the information out there and let everyone know what was needed.”
